I don’t often do submission videos. There are really too many of them online now as it is. I’ll make an exception for this one because it really solved a problem for me and might help you as well. Below you will see a version of the collar choke from mount that I developed because I was trying to find a way to neutralize the bottom guys upa escape. Here’s a true story. A while back my coach Matt Thornton was really working the collar choke in his game. He tapped me out with it about a million times. After the millionth time he took some pity on me and said “all you have to do is wait until my second hand goes in the collar and upa.” Don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that before but I didn’t. Instead I tried to grab his arms and tuck my chin to no avail. When I started timing the upa right it worked well.
This technique is meant to counter that upa escape. If you take your time and do it right the upa becomes null and void. Pay particular attention to the elbow positions. This is a technique that doesn’t have to be done quickly. If you need a refresher on holding mount go here.
